Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book. Write a good one. ~ Brad Paisley
It's here! It's 2016! That time of year when you're coming off the high of Christmas and gearing up for the year ahead. The New Year can offer so much.
Anticipation of better things to come ~ Second chances ~ New prospects ~
Optimism for the future ~ Expectation for things believed ~
Confidence in the seemingly impossible ~
Faith for the unseen
(can you feel it?)
It seems the magic of a New Year pulls deeply on our soul-desires and whispers, “you can do this, your time is now.” It’s what motivates us to drag out pen and paper, brainstorming goals and resolutions. We pour our hearts into what we want our next year to look like; a healthier, wealthier, more well rounded us.
Sadly, we often find ourselves disappointed within about 30 days, settling back into where we started with little to no motivation to change anything.
There is study from 2007 involving 3,000 people showing that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, despite the fact that 52% of the study's participants were confident of success at the beginning. (Wikipedia)
Resolutions were my way of feeling better about my life.
And then not.
Because they don't work.
You know… 88% of the time!
Why is this?
I want you to think of your life as a house for a minute. You are the house and the landscape around the house is everything in your life; the people, your job, your bank account, how your body looks, or… you fill in the blank.
Imagine working day and night changing and redesigning your landscape. You trim back the hedges, dig up the old and plant the new, freshen the mulch and install designer rocks; you finish it off by edging it perfectly (whew, that’s a lot of work!)
But, how has that changed your house?
How has changing everything around you changed… you?
Our “house” is our soul. And at the core of our soul, what we really want from changing our landscape is a feeling.
“Feeling good is the primary intention.” ~ Danielle Laporte
I want to lose weight (changing the landscape) or I want to feel ~ pretty, attractive, healthy, noticed, wanted, desired, sexy.
I want more money (changing the landscape) or I want to feel ~ free, wealthy, generous, lavish, abundant, settled.
I want a new career (changing the landscape) or I want to feel ~ purposeful, useful, effective, distinguished, recognized.
I want to learn something new (changing the landscape) or I want to feel ~ refreshed, excited, renewed, smart, talented.
The KEY: knowing what you want to feel. Next, making plans as to how you’ll get there.
Then, your actions won’t just be changing the landscape;
they will truly fulfill your soul, taking you in the direction of your destiny.
So if I don’t make resolutions, what do I do to get my year going?
My dear friend, Cindy, turned me onto picking a word for the year rather than making a list. So, I set an intention. I ask myself, "What do I want to feel?” From there, I make plans.
My word of the year for 2016 is FREEDOM (and boy am I excited!)
Will you join me in feeling rather than failing your way through 2016?!
